On Wednesday, Luis Suárez was welcomed to the Porto Alegre arena of the Brazilian team Gremio by more than 30,000 fans. After his contract with Uruguay’s Nacional expired, the 35-year-old Uruguayan made a free transfer and signed a two-year deal.

After a shocking relegation in 2021, Gremio, which has won the Copa Libertadores three times, will play again in Brazil’s top flight. It will be Suarez’s eighth club, following stints with Ajax, Liverpool, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid.

In a number of videos, the Uruguayan’s former teammates, including Neymar and Sergio Busquets, spoke. After watching videos of his family on the big screen, Suárez wept.
“Over the past few days, I have received incredible love. Suárez stated to supporters, “I promise I will play, score, and win titles for Gremio to return where it belongs.”
