In an effort to recover from the pandemic, Chief Executive John Lee announced on Wednesday that Hong Kong would be ending its mask mandate. This marked the end of the financial center’s last significant Covid restriction.
One of the last places in the world, the city mandated face coverings for anyone over the age of two in virtually all public settings or risk a fine of up to HK$10,000 ($1,275).
Lee made the announcement at a brief press conference on Tuesday, “I announce that the masking requirement will be completely cancelled beginning tomorrow, March 1, including for indoors, outdoors, and (on) public transportation.”
He went on to say that nursing homes and hospitals can set their own rules.
Three years ago, the mask requirement was put in place, and it had been in place for nearly 1,000 days.
After Macau, a neighboring Chinese territory, relaxed its own mask regulations on Monday, eliminating the measure with the exception of high-risk public areas like hospitals.
