Foxconn, a component manufacturer, and NVIDIA Corp. have announced a partnership to develop platforms for self-driving or autonomous vehicles for automobile manufacturers.
Foxconn, a contract manufacturer based in Taiwan, stated that it would produce automobile electronic control units, or ECUs, based on Nvidia’s DRIVE Orin chip, which was designed specifically for computing in connected and autonomous vehicles.

If automakers around the world are working on developing autonomous vehicles, the platforms and the ECUs will be provided to them. As electric and autonomous car manufacturers have struggled to maintain low costs while simultaneously ramping up production or even research in a meaningful way, this collaboration will fill a huge void that automakers have had to fill.

Foxconn will be able to overcome some of those obstacles with the assistance of Nvidia’s technology, which includes chips that process information from sensors in real time.

It estimates that the automotive industry has a $300 billion market opportunity and reported $251 million in third-quarter revenue from the segment.

According to the chipmaker, the partnership will enable it to scale up efforts to meet the rising demand for autonomous and connected vehicle chips. For autonomous driving, Foxconn, which has a vehicle manufacturing facility in Ohio, said that its vehicles will have ECUs based on Nvidia’s DRIVE Hyperion and DRIVE Orin sensors.

Foxconn, based in Taiwan, produces electric vehicles for Lordstown Motors Corp. It also has a contract to produce the PEAR model, Fisker Inc.’s second vehicle. It also produces a number of Apple products and is anticipated to produce major components of the Apple car when the car is finally unveiled and sold.
