Authorities announced on Wednesday (January 18) that actor Julian Sands, star of several Oscar-nominated films, including A Room With A View, has been missing for five days while hiking in the Southern California mountains.

According to Gloria Huerta, a spokesperson for the San Bernardino County sheriff’s office, Sands, 65, was reported missing on a trail on Mt. Baldy on Friday.

According to Huerta, the ground search for Sands was halted on Saturday due to trail conditions and avalanche risks and has not been able to resume since. The search area for Sands was in the San Gabriel Mountains, about 40 miles (64.3 km) northeast of downtown Los Angeles.

Authorities stated that they are using helicopters and drones to search for Sands whenever the weather permits, and they will resume the ground search when it is safe to do so.

On Friday, the most recent storm in a string of storms that have caused dangerous mountain conditions arrived in Southern California and lasted all weekend. In the region, two additional hikers have recently died.

Emails seeking clarification or additional information were not immediately responded to by representatives of Sands, an English-born actor who now resides in North Hollywood.

A Room With a View, a British romance directed by James Ivory, starred Sands and Helena Bonham Carter.
